What happens at a first appointment

People sometimes put off a first visit because they are not sure what it involves, or whether they will be expected to order on the spot. Neither should worry you. Here is how it usually goes.

We start by talking. What is the garment for, where will you wear it, what do you already own and like, what do you never wear and why. Ten minutes of this tells me more than a tape measure does, and it is where most of the decisions are quietly made.

Then the cloth. I bring out bunches from the English and Italian mills I use and we narrow them down together, by weight, colour and how the cloth will behave in the life you have described for it. If you are between two, I will say which I would choose and why.

Measuring comes next, and it is unhurried. Beyond the numbers I am looking at how you stand, where you carry your shoulders, how your arms hang, which side you favour. These are the things that make a suit look as though it was made for you rather than merely in your size.

We finish with the details: lapel, buttons, pockets, trouser rise and width, lining, and the small things that make the garment yours. I write everything down and confirm it by email so there is no doubt later.

The whole appointment takes about an hour. There is no expectation that you decide on the day. We are happy to give you time to understand what is involved and to reflect before you decide to go ahead, and if you do, we take a deposit then and arrange the first fitting.

Appointments are at 381 King’s Road in Chelsea, including early mornings and evenings, or I can come to you at home or at work across London, Kent and Sussex. Everything above happens just the same at your kitchen table.
